Classic Vegan Dinner Rolls

Warm, fluffy, and irresistibly delicious, these Classic Vegan Dinner Rolls are the perfect addition to any meal. Their soft texture and subtle sweetness make them an excellent choice for everyone, whether you’re vegan or not. These rolls are dairy-free and egg-free, yet they rise beautifully, creating that comforting, homemade feel. What’s more, they’re perfect for those following a plant-based diet or anyone looking to incorporate more wholesome, animal-free dishes into their routine.

I enjoy making these dinner rolls for family gatherings, especially around the holidays. There’s something incredibly satisfying about pulling a tray of golden rolls out of the oven, their delicious aroma filling the kitchen. My kids love them slathered with vegan butter, and they’re always a hit at our dinner table. Plus, they remind me of the ones my grandmother used to make, only now with a modern, plant-based twist.

Recipe Details

  • Cuisine: American
  • Servings: 12 rolls
  • Prep Time: 20 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes (includes rising time)

Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any other plant-based milk)
  • 1/4 cup vegan butter, plus more for brushing
  • 1/4 cup water (warm)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Equipment/Utensils

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Small saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Kitchen towel
  • Pastry brush

Preparation Steps

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Heat the Liquid Ingredients: In a small saucepan, heat the almond milk, vegan butter, and water until warm (110°F-115°F). The vegan butter should be melted, but do not overheat the mixture.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Pour the warm liquid into the flour mixture. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula until combined. The mixture will be quite sticky.
  4. Knead the Dough: Gradually add the remaining flour, about 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. First Rise: Lightly grease a clean bowl with olive oil and place the dough in it, turning once to coat. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the dough to release air bubbles. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Place the rolls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spaced evenly.
  7. Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for about 20-30 minutes, until puffy.
  8. Bake the Rolls: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  9. Brush with Vegan Butter: Remove the rolls from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted vegan butter for a soft, glossy finish. Let them cool slightly before serving.

Hi, I’m Jenny, the creator of Plant Based Palate. I started this blog in 2022 when my youngest son was just 4 year’s old. I almost went back to work as a nurse, but instead, I bought a camera off Craigslist and started this blog!

I felt the need to be home with my son, plus I never liked being a nurse, to be honest. And I absolutely LOVE creating vegan recipes. I also discovered how much I enjoy photography and taking pictures of my food.
